relationships require effort
my brother is going through a divorce. back when I was dating (both men and women), I was never single. despite me not being especially conventionally attractive (short and chubby, wonky face lmao) and him being conventionally attractive (tall and skinny, objectively good looking by western beauty standards)
my brother: it feels like I’m destined to be alone. why have you never had any problem getting women?
me: idk. have you tried treating them like actual people?
my brother: says a bunch of low key misogynistic shit in response
my brother in Christ (and in blood) this is why you’re single. he, like many men, can’t seem to see women as Actual People. i asked him if he even had any female friends and he goes “no I already have enough friends and they’re all male” and I’m like ??? your friendship roster is full up so how are you going to find someone new? why not befriend some women?
he’s like “I don’t want to fuck men” and I’m like I didn’t say you needed to do so but if you won’t even befriend a single woman what makes you think youre going to find one to date?
I kinda just wanna ask him “do you even like to be around women?” like obviously he’s attracted to them but if he won’t talk to them outside of a Girlfriend or Potential Lover role then… idk
and he goes “I’m in my mid thirties most good/attractive women my age have kids and/or are already married” and I’m like look in the mirror bro what does that say about you.
he’s like “hot women have the highest standards and so won’t settle for men like me” and simultaneously seems to want:
- a “low maintenance” woman who fits his loner lifestyle exactly with zero compromise required
- but is also willing to commit to him 100%
- conventionally attractive with no kids
- minimal existing “baggage”
- will be patient with your disordered, childhood traumatized ass who thinks meds and therapy are a scam and refuses to get help
and those women maybe do exist, but they’re not going to fall into your lap!! and the fact that he’s unwilling to work on his own mental state… well we clown on the “hit the gym, lawyer up, delete Facebook” guys but the premise of “work on yourself first” is legit.
he also doesn’t seem to realize that relationships are a ton of work and compromise. I’ve been with my husband for 11 years now and even to this day we still do a lot of work and compromise with each other all the time.
bringing another whole ass human along with you for the ride that is life is complicated, even with the most chill and understanding partner. it means you don’t get your way all the time anymore.
so when he shakes his fist at the sky and goes “damn you, cosmos! I am destined to be alone!” really it’s more like, no, you WANT to be alone. or more accurately, you’re unwilling to make the sacrifices required to have a long term serious romantic relationship. and that’s ok! but don’t pretend like it’s the universe colluding against you.
Things Are Normalizing
So, starting to get finally used to the new relay position. School also starts in a month, so I have that to look forward to. And by look forward to, I mean get ready for. Our steno machine still acts wonky half the time, so trying to get it to work is always a pain, but it’s better than spending another several thousand dollars that I just don’t have on a newer one. Though I do wish I could afford a newer one. There’s no way that is happening with this $13/hr job.
Trying to get an actual, workable schedule here has been a nightmare. Like, a literal nightmare. This place is a shitshow. However, we managed it. We are also on the final stretch of the administrative headache for school. Namely, we are just down to getting transcripts imported properly to the new school. It’s a small enough school that the transcripts are done by, like, one person. And that person is not very responsive and just kind of clicked “import all” on our transcripts and didn’t look over them again. Not a great look, but this is where we are. At least the financing part is out of the way, besides buying the books we will need for the two years or however long it takes us (hopefully not longer than that.)
I’m really glad that we have made a few work friends to vent at or just chat with. It definitely helps. Not the biggest fan of the weird things being whispered in my ear on night shift either, so I’ll be happy to get off night shift in general. Plus more time with E and them.
Uh… well, there’s probably more to update, but I’m just too exhausted. We keep having bad nightmares as usual, so it’s hard to stay totally awake. I’m glad they also just keep us on M-F, which isn’t surprising considering that’s when they need us the most at work.
Well, I’ll be waiting to win the lottery, so I can upgrade my steno machine. Until next time.
Blog Move
Finally, got onto a decent blog structure. Of course, there’s still a lot left here to be desired. For example, I wish it showed the time, so it was more obvious that I am up doing this on my phone terminal at 2am. ah well.
Finally registered for classes again. Didn’t think we would ever go back to college, but here we are. On top of that, tomorrow is our first day taking live calls at CSD. Just a lot happening. I hope things settle into normalcy soon.
a lot happened
so a lot has happened. just… haven’t even had the energy to write about all of it.
covid and then the CPR/elias dying of a cardiac arrest and revived by us thing. (we got covid from the bday celebration mentioned in the last post…)
quitting volunteer work subsequently.
the whole “kinetic d2d” arc.
now a few weeks into the csd job and wanting to go back to school.
there’s so much that was going on, and i just haven’t… had the energy. i know it’s a lot to not write about. maybe it’s harder to write about the difficult stuff. i don’t know. maybe i’ll have the energy to write about it someday. but also maybe some things are better left unsaid. i don’t know.
elias bday celebration
today was so fun! we went to round 1 in the grapevine mall. lots of claw machines (I even won them a little cinnamoroll dressed as kuromi) and lots of rhythm games. then we walked around the mall, then went to Japan house which has high quality all you can eat sushi for a very reasonable price ($33/person). it was very very fun today.
well, I hope I can get over feeling so anxious about my job. I quit the BHU due to some stuff I won’t go into here. we are going to go back to school and deciding what for. looking into potentially a MA and/or PhD in forensic psychology…
to all the patients, I will miss you all… we will do our best to get more power to make sure people like you are treated humanely and appropriately, and given a fair trial…
new volunteer position!!!
so on Tuesday (yesterday), i had orientation at the new hospital i’m working at. i stopped by the gift shop for a drink. i had already been thinking about volunteering at the hospital - they have an organization called Sunshine Guild and i really wanted to volunteer but i didn’t know who to go to about more information. they were supposed to show us the gift shop and volunteer opportunities during orientation day but sadly it was closed for the day bc orientation ran so late!
in the gift shop, the lady running it was on the older side. i knew that the volunteer organization was pretty much all older people from looking at the webpage but it looked like they had 30-40 people from the webpage. i stopped and got an advil for 50 cents initially.
“is that all you want to put on the card?” she didn’t have to say it, but i just knew from… idk where i got the knowledge, that that was a very very quiet hint (that she probably didn’t mean to let slip!) that they have high fees for any credit card transactions… you know, the reason why most people at small businesses or shops have a minimum on cards.
i was like “oh, no actually do you have a bottle of water with it? also maybe…” and started basically buying a bunch of chips. the food there is super cheap so i suspected they weren’t making much of a markup on it honestly.
i remembered that there was a sign outside of the shop talking about the volunteer stuff, remembered the schedule that said “gift shop plus volunteer opportunities” and sort of put two and two together.
i said to her, “hey… where can i sign up to volunteer?” she looked like ridiculously shocked. i was like “i’m going to be the easiest person you have ever onboarded. i know when i came in to get my blood drawn for onboarding and my shots one of the volunteers told me that even volunteers needed all that and background checks - but all you have to do is go to HR and get the paperwork.”
she was like… genuinely shocked. i think part of it is just that i’m a man for one (literally all their other people on the website besides what looked like probably two reluctant husbands) were women. also that i was under the age of 80. just being real - everyone who volunteered there seemed to be really old from my cursory glances online. but third, because i’m not just “not old”, i am also “old enough to be a working professional.” since i’m in my mid 30s, usually this is the “prime of career” for people and you don’t typically get volunteers in that age demo i don’t think. i’m old enough to have 15+ years of white collar experience (and cashiering and all the basic ‘teenager/college student’ jobs) under my belt, but not so old that i’m retired. many people my age (and gender…) are grinding and trying to make a dollar out of every minute. for example - i could easily be taking more shifts at the hospital in the BHU where i’m gonna be located but i actually wanted to volunteer outside of the BHU just for variety.
she gave me the paperwork but looked kinda skeptical. i was like “i’ll try to talk my husband into it” (no go btw. gotta stay there some time myself first maybe and prove it’s fun). i told her that i’d bring the paperwork back on Thursday bc i didn’t have orientation on Wednesday this week. she told me that they had gone from 40 people down to only 8 (!!!) after COVID. she told me “sadly a lot of people were older and just didn’t come back.” of course i knew what that meant too… either they were too sick or passed away, or had loved ones who passed away, or their lives were uprooted too much. it’s sad. i could tell that they were basically on their last leg. when i left the shop she was like “bless you, thank you so much for even thinking about it”
i ended up getting the paperwork done during orientation on down time/break! she sent me a text back being like, very shocked that i actually filled out the paperwork i think and also even more shocked that i have as much work experience as i do. i suspect they might have a local high school kind of like mine that requires volunteer hours to graduate? so yeah super inexperienced kids, or older people without a lot of stamina.
i got a text from the head of the volunteers, that looked like this. actually had no clue that she was corporate… just thought she was the head volunteer.
Becky (head volunteer): Hey Nate, I’m so excited for you to get started. Can you do a brief meet and greet tomorrow or Friday possibly around 11am? This is Becky. I sent an email also
Me: Thank you for the text! How is tomorrow? I can come up to Palestine any time tomorrow - I am off work
Becky: That would be wonderful. How does 11 AM work?
Me: I am very glad you texted because I didn’t get your email! Could you try and send it again? It’s not in Spam either. The email address is: the work email i use for applying to jobs etc If that doesn’t work I have an alternate email. 11 AM works great - where do you want to meet up at? :)
Becky: Great you’ll meet me and Zeta our president why don’t we say the lobby?
Me: Sounds perfect! When you see a short little 5'2" chubby guy with transparent glasses walking in and looking around in the lobby at 11, you’ll know you have the right guy :) I can’t wait to meet with you all tomorrow! (got a laugh react)
Becky: I am 5'2" as well blonde and older or a sweet older lady in a royal blue polo is Zeta gray hair though
Me: Lol it sounds like y’all got some good fashion sense and personality :D
Becky: Aww thank you
today at 9am i made my way up to the hospital. very excited but slightly nervous, to meet the others. honestly I do really well around old people to the point where Elias' grandma was jokingly like “you got… way too much in common with me, an old lady with dementia” LMAO. i find that older people are more to the point and less BS, at least, most of them are. of course there are still some catty old people but mostly they are great and the ones volunteering for something like this are probably really nice/sweet.
i came in. actually on the way in i saw the CFO walking out! he gave me a big hi and so i gave him a big hi back. :)
i went into the hospital to hi to both of them (and basically… did exactly what i said i was going to do, went in and looked around confused trying to find people LMAO.) i know the East Campus decently well after wandering around the past couple of days just trying to get the lay of the land during orientation but also didn’t know exactly who i was looking for so i went up to the nearest old lady in a blue polo standing up there and introduced myself and she got me to the right people.
of course the other lady, Zeta came up. i guessed probably that she was in her early 70s just by looking at her but could tell that she was extremely sweet and extroverted and honest, pretty similar to me honestly. (once again, having way too much in common with old ladies…) but out came Becky who was actually corporate, like had a corporate lanyard and is probably in her 40s?
she was like “It’s so nice to meet you.” I had only spoken to Zeta for about 5 minutes waiting but already Zeta was like “he’s so sweet” and Becky said, “Yeah I went to HR to let them know you were volunteering and to get your paperwork. They told me you were the only one out of the 25 people they just hired whose name they recognized. They told me that you have an awesome personality and that we are going to absolutely love you and that you’re the nicest person ever.” i just smiled because i have awful self esteem but i was kinda flattered.
they took me back to the gift shop again. Becky was talking about it the whole way there, Zeta once again reiterating how happy they are to have my help and talking about how the numbers went from 40 to 8. when I filled out the paperwork they wanted my work history and they were like “You have a super impressive work history…” like kind of shocked that i would want to be there for whatever reason? and i was like “ahh yeah I tend to master jobs pretty quick and then get promoted like crazy for the first few years, then they put me in a trainer position, and then honestly get a little bored because there’s not a lot of movement or anything else to learn and every day starts looking the same.”
they told me they mostly need help in the gift shop rn, but promised that there was lots of work to be done if i ever wanted to do anything else. we went back to the gift shop & honestly it’s just this tiny little thing, because it’s a rural hospital in Texas. probably my office back at home is bigger, and my office is the smallest bedroom in our house. there’s a slight ‘back of house’ too.
ok something about this shop… i can tell why they aren’t selling merch. just going to be completely real. the merch they sell there is an old lady’s idea of what the young people want… beanie babies and stuff. and for some reason overpriced t-shirts that have the hospital’s logo on it (which i literally can’t think of the target audience for…)
they have big balloons that say ITS A BOY and ITS A GIRL on them, and were like “can you believe it, these keep selling out!” and i’m like thinking yes i absolutely can believe it, there’s a gigantic maternity ward that dwarfs everything else in this hospital… why do you have an entire shelf in this tiny place based on valentine’s day when this is a 1) a hospital so who cares about valentine’s day and 2) it’s the middle of january. and no children’s items. plus so much unused space - and they took me in the back and there’s a ton of inventory.
becky goes, “do you have any experience with inventory?” and i’m like “yeah absolutely, had to do it every day at starbucks.” and i went back there and nothing is in tubs, nothing is labeled, tons of stuff should be out… i’m like “ok i am gonna go get some tubs and bring my label maker from home and go ham back here” and they were happy to hear that. they showed me the little tiny back with the inventory and then i went back out front in front of the register.
zeta once again was like “well all the older ladies don’t want to work this register. they’re all afraid of technology, me and one other lady are the only one who can do it. we used to have enough people to shift this place 8 to 5 and that’s what i want to do again, but right now, we only have it open 9 to 2 because most volunteers only want to work five hours.”
i didn’t say it then but i will on Monday… i can work 8 hour shifts, lol. elias is at work all day during the week, i don’t have anything else going on. i think if i would have said it then they both would have fainted from a heart attack or something. even the younger lady.
she mentioned that it’s usually pretty slow and that i can watch youtube, do crosswords, read a book, do school work. i was like thinking to myself, man, you do not know me if you think i’m gonna just sit out here and run out the clock - i’m here voluntarily, it’s in the name hahaha. i did respond “oh some days that’s really nice, but a lot of days i prefer to be up and organizing, cleaning, maybe clearing out the back or something, just trying to keep busy.” she said that she was the same way.
i went “hey, are we asking customers what they want? I think when I’m in here working, I’m going to ask what they were looking for that they couldn’t find in here, if anything. that should give us some guidance on what people are really looking for. I can just write it down.” of course i know that sometimes the customer doesn’t actually know what they want until it’s in front of them (and also, gotta read the room, if someone is super stressed because their loved one is hurt they probably don’t want to be partaking in unpaid personalized market research) - so actual market research needs to be done for hospital gift shops with similar stats that are doing well (rural, highly labor & delivery oriented). didn’t say all that but just asked if we are asking people what they want.
becky was like “…wait that’s an amazing idea.” and seemed once again shocked that i have even an ounce of marketing competency hahaha. she was like “god i’m so glad we have you. you have the best personality, HR was right.” then she had to go. like literally meant it so sincerely and i was so confused.
honestly most of the hour or two i spent with Zeta was just me building rapport essentially. she kind of showed me how to use the register but she had also typed and printed out a labeled diagram that literally had like a three step process to use this three (3) button register. really not that complex. and thankfully no balancing the drawer at the end of the day - i asked specifically bc that was always my least favorite part of doing cashier but it was just, “just leave $40 in there at the end of the day.” i’ll have to ask where they drop the rest of the excess cash but yeah.
(also she directly confirmed my suspicion about the credit card charge being super high and that they actually lose money on transactions under a dollar. the business minded person of me immediately thought “then only let people use a card if their purchase is over $2 or something” but haha didn’t address it at that moment. one problem at a time so to speak.)
i told her i have next monday off and apparently that locked me into Mondays being my day. i thought she would want more than one day a week but nope just wants one day a week, five hours on that one day. i’m going to have to let her know next week that I don’t have the following Monday, but I am also going to let my manager in the behavioral health position (my regular position) that i need Mondays off. i’m sure “i’m volunteering here in the gift shop to help the lil old ladies who only have 8 left in their ranks” is going to be one of the more compelling reasons haha. but yeah - doing it on Monday also means that every other week when they have orientation… i’ll actually be in there and the gift shop will be open, so no one else will have the same “what is this Gift Shop/Volunteer Opportunity thing? oh well” moment.
zeta and i talked for a bit just standing in the shop. really, people open up to me so quickly to the point where it is actually actively a shock to me, even to this day, even though it’s been like that for as long as i can remember/my entire life. she was like, “oh man, i used to be such a pushover.” and i was like, “what incident made you change that? how old were you?” and she seemed shocked that i actually followed up with another question. she asked me how old i thought she was. she had said just before that that she had been married 64 years after i asked, and she was like “well that kind of gave away the game…” and i was like doing math and she was like “no no, don’t take the 64 years into account.” and i was like “honestly? i guessed like… early 70s.” she said that nope she was 83 (guess she got married when she was 20.) she told me a little bit about her relationship, and it honestly sounds like a really great healthy relationship. i guess it has to be if you’re married that long…
but she told me the story about how she grew a backbone one day. she told me in her late twenties (cue me doing mental math and figuring out this is about the mid sixties) she was working in a newly opened Sears in the mall. she said that she had been a people pleaser up until then but there was this one sales man (cause of course it’s a man…) who just couldn’t be pleased and was always barking orders at her no matter what she did. and she said she always tried to bend over backwards for everyone and that day she just snapped and said “no, you know what, i’m busy right now. you can wait.” to him and ever since then, that was history haha.
i told her that her late twenties is a pretty early time to learn that lesson especially in that day/age when sexism was so rampant. (of course the mid sixties wasn’t nearly as bad as the decades prior but it was still really, really bad for women in the workforce, for a lot of reasons.) and she was like yeah i was really lucky. i was like “well… i mean, at your age now? looking how you do? either you have an amazing health routine or you got really lucky.” and she was like “honey no, i just got really lucky” lmao i didn’t say this but wanted to say, that probably being up and around and still active at her age (even with volunteering) likely engaged her body and mind enough to stave off a lot of the nasty shit that comes after a lot of people retire… plus being the type of person that volunteers like that probably is a kind hearted and low stress person.
i asked her how long she’d been volunteering there- 2012. she said she wanted to quit last year but they talked her into one more year. she said that she used to hate math but forced herself to like it when she got transferred at a young age to an accounting department… etc (see what i mean by people just kinda, opening up to me. like i know so much about her now.) but i was genuinely engaged in convo with her like i am with everyone! because i genuinely find everyone super interesting no matter what. it’s always interesting to me to see how people got to where they are and how they became the person they are now. i dunno.
anyway…
she also told me that she wanted to get me actually up and helping patients, like showing them back to their rooms and there’s a few other tasks associated with that. i was like thinking well we’ll see how i feel - i might feel too overloaded from that in my day job but also i am keeping an open mind. i have a curse that whenever anyone sees how extroverted and nice i am, they want to put me in front of as many people as humanly possible.
we went back out front and the other older lady volunteer (forgot her name already i’m sorry!!) came and was like “well, i think this is such a cute little bowl in here, i wanted to buy it.” i guess she hadn’t seen the merchandise. i think it was a foldable dog bowl which is also like, why is that in the hospital giftshop… anyway zeta was like “oh that hasn’t sold for a really long time and you volunteer here so it says $6 so i’ll give it to you for $1.50” and she was struggling to find change and i was like “hey if you want i got it for you?” and she was like “oh no you’re so sweet, but thank you.” my thought was it was just $1.50 (and a lot of older folks are on a fixed income) but yeah. so she showed me how to register a discount and told me that if i wanted anything from the gift shop i could buy it for half price… (well, i think i’ll pass on all the ancient beanie babies…) but i was just like “oh that’s really cool” even though i’ll likely never use that even for food bc i don’t work even in that building of the hospital on my normal days (unless i wanted to hoof it all the way over which honestly, there is a non zero chance i might on lunch breaks just to say hi lmao.)
she told me that they also like to sell flowers because they sell REALLY quickly which makes sense in a hospital setting, but they had an issue - since the shop was so inconsistently staffed, they died quickly. i told her actually, the person who we hired to do the initial clean on our house also owned a floral shop right by my house and i could potentially talk to her about maybe selling them at cost or at a discount for a good cause/volunteer organization. she was like “oh wow really, that is an amazing idea. i knew of a shop around here i wanted to go to, but haven’t had the time or energy. i figured i might be able to give them the same pitch.” then she asked what i thought about succulents? i told her “that is actually an amazing idea. because not only can they survive a lot and survive the weekend if no one is here, it’s also a nice easy low maintenance plant for people who are sick in the hospital. flowers make me sad sometimes because they wilt so quickly, but succulents don’t have that problem.”
lil more chit chat and then we headed out. she was showing me to everyone she could who we passed by. boy i could genuinely listen to people talk for hours and not be bored, everyone has such wild stories and lives lmao. she was like “here’s nate! he’s the new volunteer here!” for the first one or two i also said “oh yeah i just got hired in BHU too” but she wasn’t adding that onto the introduction so i caught the vibe and didn’t add that afterwards i was like hmmm there’s a reason she’s not adding that… idk if east campus and west campus got beef, or what. but anyway yeah i said hi to everyone with a big smile, it was nice to meet people. she told me that she always stopped people in the halls and said hi and introduced herself. i’m gonna have to try to do that too - cause when an 83 year old lady says she always does something, once again, it’s for a reason and you listen… she’s probably speaking from wisdom on that.
she tried to take me down to HR to get my volunteer badge (different from my work badge/has a different title and design. thank god bc i didn’t want to get bothered for Paid BHU Work Stuff while volunteering) but HR lady was down at a meeting. i told zeta “damn I bet Mary Kay is tired of seeing me.” Mary Kay is the main HR lady who has been there at that hospital like… longer than i’ve been alive (nearly 40 years). i keep having to see her because well, for one i needed a bunch of vaccinations she had to give me, and then i had to warn her about my drug test probably coming back positive because of my ADHD stimulant (spoiler alert: it did), then i warned her about my degree probably not coming back as finished (spoiler alert: they didn’t even check because this position only needs a GED)
lmao i caught her vibe right away as soon as i first went into her office. tried to make chit chat and she was giving me one word answers and she had the lights practically out and i was like ok this lady likes her zen/peace and quiet and so i just sat quietly in her office and followed the vibe so to speak. so honestly it surprised me that her & the other HR lady said i was like the nicest person ever, bc i think i’ve said like three words to Mary Kay. i guess when someone just wants peace and quiet, when you give them that, you become the nicest person ever? that is the easiest person to get along with.
but yeah i was like “well, we can just do this before my shift on Monday if you want.” because she went running around the hospital trying to find her and i was like, ahh yeah, they’ll definitely be here and available Monday morning. and she was like “oh right, you’re right, let’s just do it then.”
i asked her what she was doing after this and she said she had to go down to the store to restock the gift shop. she told me that she was buying the food stock at… potentially the most expensive place to do that kind of thing (brookshire/local grocery store.) i was like “oh, well, um, is there a sams club or costco around here? we could at least get monster and coke and dr pepper from there?” because those three items in particular, sell out really quickly all the time, because the entire hospital is a “Pepsi Zone Only” due to a contract i think. so all the vending machines, etc. she told me she had a walmart credit card that some of the other volunteers had. i was like “well, if you ever need me to do a shop run, i can do that for you.” bc i do appreciate how much time and energy and effort that is for a lil old 83 year old lady. she was like “well, how about after a month of working here” and i was like “yup totally agree, don’t give me the keys to the kingdom quite yet” and she seemed happy that i agreed and didn’t give her trouble about it. i mean, that just honestly makes sense and also she’s probably used to dumbass teenagers… whom i would not be instantly handing over the credit card to, to be fair.
more chit chat on the way to both our cars as we were leaving. we both apparently have a tendency to “midwestern goodbye”. in fact she was like “oh stop me if i talk too fast” and i was like “girl i’m from michigan born and raised, when i moved down here all the native Texans told me they couldn’t understand me because i talk a mile a minute.” lmao.
i asked her if the shop helped fund the extra employee benefit stuff but she said it was just to keep the lights on. she also told me that they were having serious trouble with fundraisers and that’s what they used to build up the scholarship fund for employees, and some other employee type things. she said she had an idea for a fundraiser this year but didn’t elaborate. she told me that it was very easy to get people to contribute when there were direct payroll contributions, but since they took that out - they have to actively fundraise which is harder. their fundraising funds went way down since then, like from thousands of dollars a year to like a thousand dollars last year. i told her, “hmm. well, i have a graphic design background. maybe if i print a big pretty color graphic and post it up on the register and list all the things the fund does, we could round transactions to the nearest dollar. it would be easier for people to pay in cash, and all those little transactions add up, that’s why big companies do it. plus you know that people already want to donate because so many opted to have it taken straight from their paychecks. if we make it as easy for them as possible…”
she was like, “oh man. you are actually full of great ideas” and actually like, meant it, not doing the southerner sarcastic thing, which surprised me again. she touched me on the shoulder and was like “nate… in 83 years here, i can tell that you’re one of the kindest, sweetest people with one of the best personalities i’ve ever met already.” i was like… “well… thank you very much for saying that. i genuinely appreciate it because i don’t always feel that way sometimes, but i’m just glad that i’m able to make a difference however i can.” and then we midwestern goodbye talked for another 2 minutes and finally i pulled myself away and went home.
i continue to stay shocked that anyone can stand me let alone actively like me hahaha.
the actual job sounds really fun though. like, why play Supermarket Simulator on steam at home when i can roleplay a shop keeper irl with basically full freedom, because they actually seem to trust me? honestly it was very weird - everyone who she introduced me to kept acting like i was some kind of war vet, “thank you so much for volunteering” “thank you so much for your service.” i think they realize that the volunteer guild is essentially on life support at this point and getting someone much younger in there who has the time and energy to help revitalize it may actually breathe a little bit of life back into it. i was called more than once, a “savior” which i don’t feel like a savior or anything.
i don’t know if it’s just bc i’m ultra autistic but my viewpoint on life is… if i put more positive “into” the world than i take out (on days that i’m upset, or stressed, or angry, or whatever) then that’s a net positive. i’m privileged to be able to do that most of the time… for a lot of different reasons. but i also realize that a lot of people CAN’T do that all the time. so if everyone just tried to do that as much as they possibly could, that could do that? then the world would be 10000% times better. and just fuckin do it. don’t brag about it - post about it on your private blog, maybe share it with one or two people to show them how your day went, and move on with your life. there are days that i’m stressed and angry and unfair with others, but i think there are probably 2x as many days that i’m the opposite, so i try to balance that out decently enough haha. with that plus my new job working as a mental health tech in the inpatient for high acuity patients and forensic, well, i should be banking up enough to “pay for” my own somewhat stressed days and hopefully other people’s who can’t.
idk oh well. seems fun and i’m looking forward to it. (and i told my friend lyn that i should learn how to knit baby beanies or blankets or something while i’m IN the shop bc then at least while i’m in the shop, i’d be actively learning a new skill, actively learning something, and they’d probably sell well if i put up a sign being like A VOLUNTEER WHO WORKS HERE HANDMADE THESE also it’s such a big hospital for maternity… i mean, just makes sense. but only after i got good, not selling no shitty things and also would sell them basically at cost so the money could go back to the volunteer guild. why not)
second day at job thoughts
I’m starting to think the nurse thing is an age issue. the younger nurses seem to be little jerks and the older nurses seem to have enough wisdom to not be little jerks. but yeah lots of “them being little jerk” moments to me today which I won’t get into yeesh.
i also learned today that the main part of the hospital has a bad reputation - apparently stuff happened 20-30 years ago and in a small community like this people just… you know. I don’t know about BHU though.
you can learn basically any unlicensed positioned in the hospital on the job here. for example, the rehab people said that if we ever get bored of behavioral health we can float to rehab or even pick up extra shifts there. that is, if our manager would let us - because apparently behavioral health is VERY busy from what everyone has said.
my autism continues to make me weird and unlikeable in group settings/classrooms ahaha. because I cant read the room sometimes. no “major missteps” but, for example, she showed a video with a true story where two people went into the ER at the same time & one had really bad wounds and the other had not as bad but had an alcohol addiction. she said it was a high speed chase. she asked who we thought the victim was - of course my brain goes “well she wouldn’t ask this question if it wasn’t an m night shamalayan twist” but also I was like “well it was high speed which makes me think the non addict was speeding and hit the addict” and yep that was the case… I was like “you can’t ever truly know who it was just based on their addiction status” because it is entirely possible for some kid texting and driving to hit someone who just also happens to have an alcohol addiction (maybe they weren’t even drunk then) but yeah didn’t make me the most likeable person there.
I try to step back in classroom settings from answering all the questions but always it feels like the teachers are specifically teaching me because I’m the one who nods my head, writes notes, asks questions, stays engaged. a lot of these nurses seem to have the “been there done that” attitude and it’s like, you might learn something new, you don’t know?!
a lot of this content isn’t relevant to me in behavioral health like catheters but the wound dressing lady said “we get a lot of gunshot wounds in BH” and I was like is that because of the jailed people or suicide….
I signed up to volunteer for the Sunshine Guild here at the hospital - it’s a volunteer group that does stuff like patient and employee help, runs the little shop, etc. they said they needed someone to run the shop because everyone there is a little old lady afraid of the register - and they went from 30 people to 8 because they lost a lot of their volunteers (old people) to COVID which is incredibly sad. but I can come in on my days off and work the gift shop. the shifts are a pretty small commitment (i think only 5-6 hours per day?) and since they work directly inside/with the hospital, i’m sure that both parties will be able to work with each other schedule wise.
we ended up running literally 45 minutes late from leaving today for a really dumb reason. I don’t mean to be judgmental, but if you can’t follow simple instructions like “at least ten characters, one capital, one special character, and not your name” then I’d be scared to have you as my nurse… other people had serious things they needed to be attending to - one girl next to me is late to her study group and the other she is the caregiver for her mom and her mom was at home waiting for her. and none of us even got paid for those 45 minutes because it was a manual punch today. :/
sometimes (most of the time) when I’m around other people besides close friends and family I feel like I’m just faking all my reactions and emotions which makes me very likeable because I am decent at gauging what reactions someone expects and subtly pivoting when needed. i don’t know if it’s the autism or the trauma (probably a combination) because obviously it’s an autism thing but also growing up in a severely abusive environment i was basically every single second watching everyone’s micro reactions and reacting back in the exact way that they wanted me to, to diffuse their abuse
for example, today, the trainer at work told us a story about how she had to go sit and watch someone in the psych unit for her entire shift. she was like, “oh, he told me ‘give me one good reason i shouldn’t kill you then everyone else in here’” and i didn’t react at all, ahaha. like, my face didn’t move even a little bit. i just have no reaction to that information or someone saying that. but all the others in the room (just nurses today) audibly gasped and had gigantic reactions. and the trainer was like, “see, you can’t have that kind of reaction when you’re watching psych patients.” and it’s not like i was particularly having to bite my tongue or change my expression, i just… didn’t have any reaction to that information? i might also be desensitized from being friends with literal sociopaths over the years who have said things 1,000 times worse, but like… yeah.
i’m almost like “that’s not even the most awful thing someone has said to me this week let alone the worst thing I’ve ever heard.” reminds me of the therapist who threw a gigantic fit (started crying???) when elias told her their trauma.
then i came home and ava had ingested something bad and we might have to take her to the ER. ah, life.
first day working at the hospital
man… today was a LOT. this week they have orientation for the new hospital i’m working at. i got a job as a mental health technician which i am really looking forward to. the first few days are 8-4 basically just “classroom”, like today was the “everyone talks at you and does PPT stuff” day and tomorrow is the “thousands of computer modules” day. then later in the week they literally give me combat training to figure out how to defend myself i guess? and restraining too if i need to.
honestly i heard the phrase “nurses eat their young” today and i can see why. already twice in one day the nurses there tried to bully me LMAO it felt like being back in high school?? it was fucking bizarre. i was like ladies i am in my mid 30s you’re about 20 years too late to that party. not going to go into detail about it because honestly it’s not even worth “memorializing” here!!
i think part of the “problem” is that there were only two people who were going to be working in the BHU (behavioral health unit) and one of them is like… a super part time social worker. it was really weird for them to keep being like “oh you’re over in BHU? they do stuff differently there” and for them to talk about how insanely dangerous it is over there. essentially acting like i’m going to walk in and instantly be mugged which is funny.
they gave us free breakfast (which i didn’t partake in bc of said Annoying Mean Girl Nurses) and free lunch which was pretty good… chicken legs, mac and cheese & apple pie. yumy
everything else was what i think is standard fare for hospital orientation probably?? them just talking about HR stuff, HIPAA, had us do a practice run on PPE, a few weird youtube videos, menu, communication, etc. they tried to cut us loose early but also said that they could show us around the hospital so i took that opportunity even tho i won’t be working in that area. you never know if i will need to know where to go…
also the health insurance is really good. they said they will reimburse 100% of my plan through elias so i just need to reject their insurance and talk to them about it. honestly a pretty good deal and basically “free health insurance” at least up to 10k which pretty much doesn’t happen in the US so yay.
anyway everyone in the BHU/mental health area seems extremely nice! new manager came over and ate lunch with me which was super friendly and nice. honestly i’m just happy to get the first day over with.
i also had to do a flu shot today, and then have to do like fifty of them tomorrow (DTaP, hep b, etc.) i’ll have to remember to get the paperwork so i don’t have to get those again esp since like the DTaP is good for ten years & i don’t want to have to deal with it again until a decade from now.
uhh other than that? idk. we’ll see how the rest of the week goes. i’m just really relieved that my manager is super sweet & everyone in BHU so far is really nice. that’s all that really matters.
chaos
today was so chaotic
- 2 hours of sleep
- wake up at 7:30am
- 40min drive to New workplace
- piss test number 1 at new workplace/pre employment
- inform employer im on a stimulant for ADHD that might come back positive, they say they don’t care
- pre employment paperwork
- blood work to prove I had childhood vaccinations for work, had to take from both arms
- drive back home 40min
- fight with removing old visor and installing new one in car, an especially difficult task
- find that my BFF and Elias both had late gifts for me that came in - cute purse and loose legos
- put external hard drive files to transfer to server
- drive Elias & I to new psych - 1hr10min
- do more new hire paperwork from phone including background check stuff, put in my GED and not my college
- drive to Walmart to buy a small desk at Walmart for the computer in living room (only about 5min)
- hurry and drive back for my own appointment
- piss test number 2 (yes probably first and last piss test combo during one day for different people) because psych/stimulants
- talk to doctor
- go out for kaitenzushi sushi to relax and celebrate job - 1.5hr drive
- realize that background check probably wanted my college even though job only requires/asks for GED, just so it matches my resume on file
- look at transcript, realize my moronic old college fucked up my transfer and background check will likely come back as degree unearned
- send a text to HR giving them a heads up/explaining situation
- spend the rest of night being anxious about it
- go to claw machine only arcade
- win a kuromi plushie
- drive back home, 2hr drive
- surprisingly got home in one piece despite multiple people trying to cause crashes likely because it’s the night before New Year’s Eve
- the download/transfer didn’t work because it paused on transferring… a virus? for some reason I backed up quarantined viruses from 2016 on my external I need to delete them hahaha
- still dwelling on anxiety, put together desk for distraction
- realize I got an email an hour after the first email, saying I had passed background check… less anxious but still somewhat anxious
- look up rules on how to fix it and get my degree awarded/sent
- update brother and friends podcast website
- work on transcribing some old journals
- realize I have therapy tomorrow, worlds largest sigh
- veg out in front of TV until 2:30am
and yes that means I drove almost 6 hours today
depression and isolation
on the bright side for the people around me, when I get depressed I am super low maintenance meaning that I rly don’t ask for much of… anything, no socialization, no extras, I’m essentially the pet rock version of a friend. on the other hand that means I don’t even really have the energy to take care of myself or important things in my life so that sucks.
I honestly don’t even know if people realize that I’m socially isolating ngl. I think people are so damn used to me being the one to initiate anything social, etc that no one else bothers to do so. I mean ffs my father didn’t even call on Xmas this year so like…
idk I’m just kinda tired of being the one who always has to reach out. and a lot of my friends & family will make excuses if I ever try to talk to them and be like “oh you know how I am, I’m just introverted” and I’m like ok? I’m an extrovert & I learned how to leave people alone, so def introverts can learn to initiate conversations…? idk I’m done with the excuses. its not a great look to just blame your failings on some random “how I am” style personality trait, that’s a cop out so you don’t need to examine that bad behavior & step up as a friend
but I’m so depressed right now that I like… don’t even care to fight that fight or reach out or anything. and then I end up all socially isolated bc the some of the people who are supposed to be closest to me won’t reach out when I really am having the hardest time ever.
I think I kinda just let people get used to me being the “therapist friend” without any expectation of reciprocation for way too long. probably I need to like, mourn some of these “friendships” and accept that these aren’t the types of people that I really want or need around me and find people who will, idk, reach out when they notice i have been isolating (I mean several people in the past have said AFTER the fact that they noticed I was isolating and just didn’t want to reach out… like bro you know I’m depressed and suicidal, why would you not reach out?)
i know I’m not the normal bundle of fun and bright sunshine and “you’re the most important person in the world” energy giver when I’m depressed but any kind of relationship is supposed to be a two way street. I know the answer is to cut off the energy vampires but ugh…
I’m just hoping maybe I’ll meet some new friends at my new job, or something :/
another job offer (mental health tech)
so, I got another job offer. and the offer letter is signed & accepted which is nice. they do have mandatory drug testing which is kinda like duh for this type of position
it is a mental health technician at a local(ish) inpatient hospital. it is locked down, but it is part of a bigger hospital system/not a standalone. I will be working PRN/scheduling myself 3 days a week, 12 hour shifts 7am to 7pm. I am allowed to take more hours if I want. the pay isn’t great but that’s fine because I have really really been wanting to get into mental health.
I hadn’t felt nervous for an interview in a long time, but I did here because I actually cared about the job. the lady I interviewed with was extremely nice! there are two units each with 20 beds, and those you have to do 15 minute rounds on. then there’s a bigger unit for people trying to become competent for trial because they have been accused of a crime but a judge has found them mentally unfit to stand trial
I am excited because it feels like I will be able to help people. I know it will be a pretty tough job at times. I honestly think the fact that it is gonna be tough at times is making people… hesitant to celebrate my offer/new opportunity? I think people just think I’m going to quit right away. which I mean, I have quit jobs right away (I just did dominos a few months back lmao) but this aligns with what I want to be doing. they even have scholarships and will help me navigate the college system if and when I want to go back. if I do well and like this then I’d likely be a good social worker which honestly was my only dream growing up anyway.
I have watched lots of tiktoks and YouTube videos and read a lot of stuff online about how MHTs feel about their job. I genuinely do think I will enjoy it despite the craziness. I love working on teams, I love being social. I am one of those rare people where talking to someone for 12 hours a day sounds fun and energizing and not draining.
I am honestly a little sad that it feels like people don’t want to celebrate the opportunity with me at this point. I actually ended up dropping one of my friends over this (she was already on thin ice for months with just being generally selfish but her just plowing past me talking about my life to talk about some shitty anime was too much for me lmao).
I really do think I will enjoy this job!! I was calling my old job “the dungeon” because it was so socially isolated and WFH. for some mega introverts I am sure that’s a great opportunity, but for me it’s torture, especially when my garbage ex boss was like actively ignoring my suggestions about team cohesion (and then implementing them a year later & not crediting me but.. that’s a different story)
and it’s not like its my first rodeo with mental health. I myself have been in the hospital for suicide attempts in the past and all of my friends and family are mentally ill. my dad was in and out of the mental hospital for being bipolar type 1 his entire life. like… I know how to treat people having a mental breakdown w dignity & respect even if they can’t do the same for me at that moment. and I think that’s a kinda rare quality…
but anyway look forward to my update where I quit in a week ig. I mean it doesn’t start until like Jan 12 which I’m grateful for bc it probably means they’re waiting until the holiday craziness is over. and then there’s a full week of training and three weeks of shadowing which is! more training than I’ve ever gotten at any other position ngl lmao. they do have a shit ton to train me on tho like BLS, daily needs, restraints, etc.
and for my own mental health, I have my therapist who I have been with for several years by now & she also worked inpatient mental hospital before so she knows what’s up. she knows she is gonna have to support me esp at the beginning
so yeah I am super proud of me and excited even if no one else is that much lmfaooo.
the bottom line is that I care so much about people and want to leave the world a little better than I found it. and for that I think I could be extremely impactful in this position in particular so long as it’s not too triggering or overloading…
(it does suck to have to take such a big pay cut tho. mental health hardly ever pays anything unless you get into the very high positions like psychiatrist, sigh. oh well)
still here
yes, we are still here. it’s just that it has been way too busy and exhausted to update here unfortunately. we have been doing TMS full time for six weeks starting in september, and then we started spravato which has been life changing. it really has helped our depression so much. like, pretty much in remission at this point.
with coming into the new year, there’s going to be quite a lot that we have to do. we are finally down to once a week on spravato, but they are changing our insurance, so we need to figure that out. there is a place that is slightly closer than the 200mi/3 hour round trip for the other place that both us and elias are going to right now. but still, it’s been exhausting have to drive to and from dallas every day for months now. it’s just… too much honestly. so, will be glad to be moving to somewhere closer, and only doing it once a week.
still, everything is so tiring…
I quit Dominos
dominos
I quit dominos halfway through the shift. Absolutely fuck that shit. My life is too short and valuable to spend it like that.
- first day at dominos
- come into the store at 5pm
- “hey I scheduled you until 12, is that ok?” it is but uhh yeah…
- brought to the tiny office, told that I need to fill out new hire paperwork ON MY OWN TIME. the audacity. I’ve never had a job do this, even McDonalds.
- manager doesn’t go over literally anything. doesn’t even show me how to clock in and out. doesn’t go over all the other new hire stuff I would expect either. literally just takes my license, gives me a shirt and hat, and shoves me with some other guy
- “we called in someone for today to train you”
- i was expecting actual training modules on a computer but ok
- guy is absolutely awful at training. goes to show that being good at the job doesn’t mean you’re good at teaching it
- takes 5 minutes to show me around the store, goes on a single run with me, then leaves (it was his day off!!)
- guy tells me literally everyone working today only has been there a few months
- I’m left on my own to figure literally everything else out
- not even sure who the manager is
- whoever the manager is is also dropping the ball, doesn’t tell me to go on breaks or lunch at appropriate times
- as per usual, female coworkers are super chill, the few dudes in there have the worlds largest attitude
- other coworker mentioned “we get 30 cents per mile”, I was told 77 in interview
- 30 cents per mile won’t even cover my gas and car maintenance
- only get paid $5 (!!!) an hour when on a delivery, then $9 in store (which should be illegal in 2025 ngl. both the tipping loophole and $9/hr)
- they assume you’ll make it up in tips
- no one fucking tips. like maybe $2-3 per delivery if I’m lucky, and these are on $40+ orders
- sign on the wall says “NO FREE FOOD FOR WORKERS, NO EXCEPTIONS” which kinda is in line with how cheap they have been, also against franchise rules because anyone working a full shift is supposed to get a lunch
- despite this, see food on the table in the back that’s being eaten by group (of course, I am not informed about it)
- expected to wash dishes when no deliveries, but I have eczema on my hands and it’s tearing up my hands
- night shift, so people arent paying as much attention, almost get into a few wrecks already
- personally am drained from my medical treatment earlier in the day so I am also low on energy and recognize that it’s unsafe for me to be driving
- everyone else is shocked that I am full time, everyone there is part time and says they wouldn’t want to work FT
- they wanted me to CLOSE THE STORE MYSELF on my first day. as in, I would be the only driver and then one other person up front closing.
- my manager (whoever that is) doesn’t even tell me this
- this place is clearly a shit show
- on top of that all the customers are rude as fuck, probably because rural Texas
- realize literally any other way to spend my life would be preferable to working another 10 minutes there, and that being homeless would be preferable too.
- take their stupid sign off the top of my car, leave it outside, put the cash in the cash box, text the person who hired me a nice “I quit” message informing her of the equipment and cash, telling her to send my check to the address on file
- I would be totally fine with them not even paying me, I’ll take whatever few tips I got and call it a wash.
also worth mentioning that they didn’t have me on the schedule for any other night besides tonight which leads me to believe they have a lot of people quit after their first day.
I’m not saying I’m above any job, but at this point in my career, this is not a job for me. Maybe if I was a teenager/as a first job? but not for someone who has been working white collar jobs for 15 years. I’ll wait a few weeks for my medical stuff to be done and find a white collar 9-5 again.
new job, hopefully for more than 5 min
new job, hopefully for more than 5 min
so I start a new job tomorrow. it’s just a really simple one, delivery driver for dominos. I’m going to continue doing TMS through the next few weeks as well. so, it’s going to be a LOT at first. I’m hoping that I can make it through the first few weeks without getting too burnt out. especially since it’s SO MUCH driving.
I’m annoyed because I’ve almost hit the 95k driving milestone on my car which means the big expensive maintenance is coming up :/ probably at least $1,000 and that’s a very generous estimate. and on top of that with having to buy new non slip shoes, pants, etc. feels like I’m going to be in debt just trying to pay off the start up costs for the job…
I think the fact that I get to sit in between walking to doors and also in between working in the store will help me ramp back up and hopefully my fatigue won’t take over too much. however, I haven’t held a job in a few months at this point, so I already know I’m going to have to get used to sitting at work for 8 hours with no distractions. (especially since, maybe worse! I haven’t worked outside of the home since COVID in early 2020. whenever I’m not working from home the hours seem to go by so slowly…)
I promised e I would be really careful about watching my mental health and quitting if I felt too burnt out. so I will give myself permission to do so, though I don’t intend to. I’d at least like to give it a few months.
I sincerely hope they realize that me having the Crywolf day off and also my anniversary off are non negotiables. I’ll be magically sick that day if they don’t approve my PTO, I don’t really care.
anyway. it will be nice to get out of the house a little. and jobs like these are so make or break based on the team/coworkers there! so I won’t know until I’m properly on the job. all things considered/all in, I think I’ll make about $15/hr average which is… fine, acceptable, whatever. for now a job is a job and it works with my treatments (even though nights and weekends is A Lot)
I’ll try to remember to update more frequently (famous last words)
TMS is kicking my ass
man. TMS has been rough. I know the first 2-3 weeks usually have the worst side effects and it’s normal to experience what I’m experiencing but since it’s so slow acting, the side effects are also slow to go away.
like several weeks in.. I’m having trouble thinking straight, having memory issues, insane fatigue etc which are all apparently side effects that I wasn’t really warned about before starting. which is fine but actually the depression is worse because of all the side effects, also just becoming worse I think before it gets better because of depression, trauma being shuffled up and etc.
I actually ditched an interview today just because it was giving me a weird trauma trigger reaction and I don’t know if I would have had that otherwise. then I feel guilty and like a piece of shit because I know I should be looking for work right now ugh.
at least it’s not a placebo effect I guess? I mean it’s definitely doing something to me for better or worse. I was a little afraid it would end up being a placebo. they had me take this long ass questionnaire today about the side effects and I’m just… yeah I don’t know.
also there are hobbies that require other people that I would like to be doing but I’d have to go find people to do it with me bc E and all my family and friends aren’t into those hobbies. and I just don’t have the energy to go meet new people right now.
on top of that all I might be starting Spravato soon (ideally) and I can’t even get the energy to contact the coordinator. e was supposed to be figuring it out for me but I don’t know if he’s had time to send over my release of information.
and of course the Starbucks next door to TMS that was my little treat afterwards, shut down this week! urgh… I’m just going to lie down forever now
mostly just tired
Hi all. I find myself mostly just tired lately. It’s hard to explain how fatigue inducing TMS has been for me. Really, it’s been the biggest negative side effect, which is hard to push through when there have been virtually no positive effects just yet. It’s three hours round trip every single day for six weeks (200 miles round trip), and I’ll tell you what… I would not be doing this unless I had absolutely no other alternative. Because right now, it is so exhausting. But what is the alternative? Not getting better?
It gets even more complicated when you realize that it’s making work awful too, or the lack thereof. There are no “normal” 9-5 jobs that are going to work around me needing to take half the business day off to go run to Dallas every single day. So, I have been looking into part-time/weekend/nights jobs. I got an interview at a grocery store for overnight stocking, but they took one look at me and how short and chubby I am and instantly decided I wasn’t right for the job. Which is awful. Like, they tried to say it was because I had “no overnight experience and no stocking experience.” You saw that on my resume. You just wanted to discriminate against my physical appearance. So pathetic.
I have another interview tomorrow, though I doubt it will go anywhere. It’s just for a job that is two Saturdays and four Sundays a month, just filling in for another person for a driving position. At this point, I’ll take just about anything. I even set up an appointment to sell plasma to help get us through and help pay for the copay and gas to get 200 miles every single day. I thought about doing Doordash today, but turns out, when I’m driving like that, I just want to get home and sit down in a chair and stop driving. I might do that a little bit later… not that Doordash is particularly worth it, honestly.
I’ve also been supplementing with Prolific. E says that I shouldn’t be so much worried about jobs and money right now and should just focus on getting better mentally. But how can I focus on getting better mentally when I know we are still negative every month? I don’t want us to have to start dipping into our super emergency. Right now, we have only been dipping into our “backup funds”, aka Elias' money, but we do have an actual emergency fund that I’d rather leave untouched if we can.
I’m probably going to try and transfer over all the posts from the other blog to this one today. But man, it’s going to be hard to look at them. I had such an “easy” life when I was a teenager, and seeing me whine about things like Gears of War versus what’s happening today is a little bit difficult… ahaha.
not forgotten about this
hey all. I have definitely not forgotten about this blog. My life has just been considerably full of stress the past few weeks. I have some major health stuff going on. Mostly major depression which doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it’s essentially an emergency level. I am going to go through TMS and Spravato soon, which is going to put further stress on our financial situation, which already isn’t ideal. Sigh… I don’t even have the spoons to get into what all is going down with the family situation, either. I will do a proper update soon, hopefully.
why are steno machines like shiny pokemon
…or better yet, like trying to find a car during COVID???
I got told by five people last week that they had sold their machines to other people and that they had been swamped with DMs. one of those people was someone who hasn’t even posted publicly, it was just me being referred by someone who had sold their machine and had a coworker looking to sell! @_@
It’s been an actual nightmare trying to find something. I managed to find one, but jeez…
I also had a really good interview. we will see how that goes. I haven’t been having any trouble getting interviews, but I’ve been picky about where I’m applying so I’m getting less and less. which actually is a good thing because it’s been crazy overloading.
I’ll just paste what I wrote to E about the interview:
interview went really well. we ran out of time because both of us were talking a lot, that kind of how it ends up when you build rapport haha. the person i interviewed with is from a small town in western michigan, about 30 minutes north of where we were born and raised so we had that in common.
they actually are open to me being in either position (the customer service or the back office position), but they wanted to meet with me and talk to me about the realities of both positions.
they seem really nice and the work seems easy. they said they might need to schedule more time with me because there was supposed to be a mock call, but we didn’t get to it because we both were asking each other a lot of questions and speaking with each other a lot/connecting.
i think if they don’t give me an offer, it’s because they genuinely feel that my personality wouldn’t be a fit. I was very, very honest about our personality, in that I am the first ones to talk when there’s an awkward pause during meetings of 20 people and the facilitator says “any questions?” and I am the type that gives a lot of feedback when I am fully trained and have mastered everything.
The interviewer also was like “we don’t mind occasional attendance issues as long as you’re really honest, I can help you out more, I really appreciate honesty” so i put that in the back of my mind and when she asked how I stayed on task, I was like, “well, this might be too much information, but I used to be really bad with this because I had unmedicated ADHD. I’m medicated now, so it’s a lot easier, but I still have XYZ process to help me stay on task.” just showing her that I am very honest in general. I was like, for better or worse, I am honest.
she asked “what are some times that you being late has affected your job performance?” and I was like, I wish I could tell you, but this has genuinely never been an issue with me, aha.
it was a huge green flag that they seemed open about accepting feedback though, as I honestly told them that that was something that we struggled with at my last position, where i felt like my feedback was hitting a brick wall a lot of times. I also told them that I struggled with a position where I am alone a lot, so in all truth, the customer service oriented position might be better for me. it seems like their other team, the back office one, has a lot of people like at merit… super introverted people who don’t really want to interact, they just clock in, do their work, and clock out. whereas the customer service position has a lot more team camaraderie, people talk a lot more. the customer service position seems to have a bit more oversight, but that’s just because the manager is more extroverted so reaches out more.
the back office position seems also a lot more like merit because they have flexible hours, whereas the customer service one, you’re pretty much clocked in and then clocked out at the same time every day. I told them that I always clock in and clock out at the same time, I wasn’t really the type that utilized the flexibility of the position unless there was some sort of medical issue happening, and then I let my manager know. whereas I know some people will clock in and clock out at very different times at merit as long as they’re still within the window. we pretty much always have worked 10-6 without any variation.
also I tried to dictate this entry and talk about actual nightmare. Google’s Android keyboard is literally broken for voice dictation lol.
what do i really want
ive been asking myself this a lot lately. like I could get into stenography and I would be super good at it, but I think it’s socially isolated. I could go back to school to be a therapist, but that is a TON of schooling. both of those trade offs I’m okay with, but I am just having such a hard time committing to anything.
I accidentally ghosted an interview this week because I was so overloaded with everything going on. it’s stressful to have done something like that :( I’m doing my best but everything is just all over the place…
Elias is doing really well w his medical treatments. I’m very happy <3 I know it’s really tough and tiring for him. it is that two hour appointment along with that four hour round trip drive twice a week, and then he insists on trying to work after, when the treatments themselves have been super intense and physically draining too haha.
he sent me a super nice message this morning telling me he appreciates me being willing to all this and how understanding I’ve been. but of course I am!! he needs medical treatment, the idea of not being there for him is so foreign to me. when he told me how intense it was going to be my response was just “no worries, put it on the calendar so I know when it is and let’s do it” because he’s the love of my life & my partner. there’s very little I wouldn’t do for him let alone something as simple as a long drive twice a week and a few hours of wait in between.
well, there’s a lot of other stuff going on. I’m starting to get overwhelmed haha. the task for the weekend is to sit down and do the nearly hundred (!) page application for this job I applied to. they are asking me a lot of personal info, it feels kinda like when I got my top secret security clearance before. they asked me for 7-10 contact info of people I knew for character references, and I’m like, not me being disqualified from this job for being friendless 😭
I’ll try to remember to post when I can. the days are starting to blur into each other, none of my interviews have been the perfect fit, and I’m just all over the place… ughhhh.
two interviews today
Dental interview tl;dr
- The dentist recognized me right away which is really funny. I must have some kind of way about me that people recognize me, because I haven’t been back in like a little over a year. The front desk lady said that I have a really positive vibe and seem fun to be around so it makes sense to her.
- I interviewed with the practice manager whom I had already met before haha.
- Seems to have the same vibe as the vet industry. That is to say, sometimes it’s slow, sometimes it’s fast paced, doesn’t pay well, but you are making a difference.
- There is some opportunity for advancement; they pay for you to become registered except for the exam fee. They also pay for all the classes for any follow up training if you want to get certified further.
- Interview mostly focused on like, how do you deal with stress, how do you deal with people being snippy. Which to me tells me that there can be stressful situations. She said it’s fairly rare, but they do have really busy times of the year where everyone is burnt out.
- This is a small town, so there’s only a few people working there. 2 at the front desk, 3 dental assistants, her (practice manager), and the dentist.
- She’s only been working there two years, she got promoted to practice manager in less than a year.
- She said that there isn’t a whole lot of turnover, and the people who do leave typically do so to continue schooling.
- She asked about my availability for a follow-up interview on Thursday because likely going to get an offer, just depends on whether or not I actually want to take it. I mean, it seems decent to me. Worst case scenario I go, oh my god, this is awful.
- I also set up a cleaning the day before hahaha. Unintentionally going to show them more on my attitude/behavior, but I just really needed to do it because it was overdue anyway.
Second interview tl;dr
- Was an MLM.
- Wasn’t even a particularly successful one, considering I already know a lot about the cruise industry.
- No other notes.
so, pretty successful day for job interviews, if you ask me.
trying to figure my life out
the therapist is also going to send me some mental health exercises to do to try and get me into the habit of like, actually doing shit. she was trying to be like "what gets you excited about getting up in the morning?" and i'm like literally nothing :( i got the depression.
the psych is being awful and refusing to switch me off my current antidepressants that aren't working. last time i had an appt with her she gave the world's biggest sigh when i told her these weren't working and was like "well i'm not doing this anymore so I'm sending you genesight so we can have some kind of clarity on what will and won't work with you." like excuse me? yeah i'm also tired of my depression but try and keep your gigantic sighs to yourself. if you don't actually want to do your job then maybe change to a different profession.
therapist was like "go do ketamine" and i was (jokingly) like "yeah I'll go talk to the drug dealer down on the corner" and she was like "lmao nooo do it legally". i eventually do wanna do ketamine therapy but i can't at the moment (or any time soon) bc I would need a ride back and forth. it's like a 3 hr round trip to get to and from the closest ketamine therapy place & e doesn't drive so I'd need to figure out a way to deal w that. the only person I could think who could give me a ride is kendrick, and I love kendrick but i rlyyy do not want to be stuck in a car w him for an hour and a half while i'm ketamine tripping LMAO.
CVS is being so fucking dumb. we need to switch away from them. healthcare in this country is a shitshow so the closest "preferred" pharmacy is like a 2 hour round trip in that town with the CVS. so elias called and asked them if his meds were in. they said they were. so i did the 2 hour round trip and when i got there they were like "uh no we don't have it in, we don't even have it in our system" which i kinda assumed considering it wasn't available online but like? they are constantly doing this. plus they aren't doing the insurance verification for my T so like??? get your shit together CVS.
likely we are going to move our stuff over to walgreens bc this is a mess. plus CVS has some new thing with our new location that you can't even call & get a pharmacist on the phone anymore!!! like they only let you leave a voicemail no matter what time of day it is, and if ur lucky they will call you back in a timely manner and you'll catch their call. total shitshow. 0/10 they are not getting our money any longer lmao.
i'm doing my best to figure stuff out but it's been so hard lately. it's just... idk. everything is exhausting. how am i feeling even MORE burnt out after quitting my job??? i guess it's bc with my job I could clock in and out and be done for the day but now I feel like i'm constantly "on" with constantly job hunting and the like. i hope that i can find some kind of peace outside of that. the therapist said it was a pretty good opportunity for me to figure out what i actually want to be doing with my day that a lot of people don't get, and i agree. we are totally privileged in that way & i'm very grateful for that. but still, it's exhausting... ugh. me @ myself: get ur shit together please

yesterday I didn’t write, but there wasn’t much to write to be honest with you. i worked, then i slept for like 16 hours. i should have just done the same today. feeling so heavily suicidal. like, i need to get back on my anxiety but the fact that i had such a withdrawal during vacation is scary. i don’t want to deal with that. but without any antidepressant i feel like i am so depressed that i might start self harming. and there is also the fact that i don’t really trust Maria, so i can’t even talk to her about anything. this sucks. it feels like everyone would be better off if i just died. i hate it. well, whatever… its whatever. hopefully i can go back to eating soon. i didn’t eat today. my eating disorder is acting up too much. will i ever be okay?
the timing of opportunities
the interviews are: mental health advocate at a local hospital and also seems like some kind of project management position at a web design firm. couldn't be more diametrically opposed. one is totally profit oriented, remote, pays a lot more, and likely a lot easier, but less fulfilling. whereas the other is not as profit oriented/more mission based, in person, pays not great, and probably harder but more fulfilling.
i still need to follow up with the local hospital one though as they tried to call and we missed it the other day unfortunately.
i got back in touch with my old friend from those days named amy. ozzy just died, and it made me think about the time that we did this variety show with her. we still have the video and wanted to share it with her. she's still living in the same place and still seems as awesome as she always was. i missed talking to her. i hope that we can keep up with talking more.
it's our brother's birthday today, which i guess means our journal archives are officially 23 years old today. kinda wild. he's got a lot of nostalgic thoughts today, can't say i blame him. considering it's his birthday, talking about amy, and also just sharing older pics with him.
by the way, with regards to transcription of old journals: still working on it. we did manage to scan them all in, but OCR doesn't work because of shit handwriting. i'm going to do my best to keep back adding the entries that i have. we have a big blue journal that was a majority of 2022 and 2023. i think 2024 is mostly missing-ish, unless it's somewhere else that i haven't seen yet.
quit my job finally
raven says I should take the week off and not do any job hunting or chores or anything, but I don't even know how that is possible. like, I was already getting bored today and finally figured out how to use the auto clean function on the oven. i will do my best to try and chill for once in my life though.
health-mental kept auto correcting to my typo from earlier and annoyed the shit out of me but I fixed it. it's 2025, why is shit like this still happening.
